A classic Downeast workboat with the full range of gear and a seasoned captain who knows where the fish are how to make the best of the circumstances. This was a gift for my 8-year-old grandson from Colorado. Our afternoon, as forecast, was windy with seas building from New York City, and lots of water flying around when we were under way. Given the forecast, Captain Frank and I had discussed changing dates, but I had no alternatives. He tried to find us some stripers in The Race, and we got two that were too small to keep, but when we were getting thrown around too much, he retreated to a more sheltered spot where young bluefish congregate. Then we could hardly keep lines in the water before a blue, or sometimes two at once, would hit a 4-way spreader. He did a great job filleting about eight blues—we marinated them that night and grilled them in a basket, and my daughters made a wonderful ceviche from a few of fillets. I’m generally not a bluefish fan, but these definitely surprised me! Captain Frank is a one-man operation, so sometimes while he was helping with gear and fish, the boat ended up lying beam to the rough seas, causing some violent rolling. He and we wished we could have changed to a calmer day, but he made the best of what we had and was attentive and helpful! The only thing I could complain about was the weather we were stuck with—no fault of his. Once we retreated to more sheltered water, my grandson had a blast!

I set this trip up for the men in my family. They had an awesome time! Captain Frank was fantastic! He was flexible in terms of rescheduling (in case it rained) and he even called to offer an alternative time to depart bc the fishing had proven better during that tide. I would highly recommend an excursion with him.
