Guided by Joseph Dibella
Captain Joseph is not your ordinary charter operator. This man has been on the sea his whole life; he started out as a mate on the boat that inspired the world-famous "Jaws" book and film at the age of 8. Now the Captain at age 72, he has been on this boat for over 64 years! He now operates his charters as a charity that benefits disabled veterans. The story of this charter is full of rich nautical history, including world-record catches, a rescue at sea, innovations in fishing equipment, habitat research, and early experiments in underwater photography and development of the shark cage. A day on the water, catching sharks with Captain Joe, will be a day to remember.
This is a fishing trip unlike any other. When you get off the dock with Captain Joseph, you'll be stepping into more than fifty years of legendary fishing history. The fine vessel you'll be taking out is no ordinary boat, but the boat that initially inspired the bestselling book, "Jaws" and the world-famous film that followed. Your Captain was a mate on that boat when it landed the still-standing world-record Great White Shark—a 3,427 pound monster fish that remains the largest fish of any species ever landed on a rod and reel. The vessel itself is 42', completely one-of-a-kind, handcrafted Chesapeake-style fishing boat, built in 1947 by Tiffany Boat Works, now Tiffany Yachts. It was completely restored by a North Carolina nonprofit, in order to begin its new mission: taking disabled American veterans out on the fishing trip of a lifetime. The purchase of your charter trip allows an equally-sized group of American heroes the chance to get out there for free. In his own words, these trips have a huge impact: "Before my eyes, I watched a quiet group of men, who had boarded the boat timid and cautious, transformed! We engaged the group in conversation, drew them out individually and showed each how to fish for speckled trout. After just a few hits, the men started joking that they were now expert fishermen. The more fish they caught, the livelier they became. When the day drew to a close and we headed in, I invited my “experts” to come up top and drive the boat. When we arrived back at the dock, the smiles on these heroes’ faces were beyond explanation. It was as if they had a whole new outlook. One vet remarked he had no idea fishing was so much fun. These fishing trips aboard the Cricket have the potential to change people's lives. I saw it that day." Obviously, in addition to going after massive sharks, you'll have the opportunity to troll and cast out for a variety of top sportfish, from Mackerel to Mahi and more. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a first-timer, this trip is an unmissable chance to learn about Montauk, about fishing history, and to catch some great fish for yourself while giving back to your country's military heroes. There's simply nothing like it. Read More
Captain and 1st mate were great! Caught plenty of fish. Nice size boat with plenty of room. We had a great time!
Captain Joseph did a great job finding us fish and accommodating our group. Nice Captain and deck mate and good price for a private charter. Thanks you, Margery
Excellent boat and crew! We were on fish all 4 hours. Captain Joe and 1st mate James were terrific and attentive, it was a memorable trip.
We had an excellent morning fishing and we caught more fish than any of the other charters out there!!! Wonderful people, comfortable boat and we cannot wait to fish with them again soon!!
Great trip. Very knowledgeable guide and lots of fish caught!
Captain Joe and James were awesome. Very laid back and super helpful with helping my 5 yr old outfish his 12 yr old brothers! It was early in the season so the catch wasnt great…but it wasnt just our boat. All the boats were chattering over the radio about how bad the day’s catch was. We will definately go back out with Captain Joe! …
Caught over 27 Spanish Mackerel in about 4 hours. I would highly recommend this boat to everyone that wants to catch fish. Captain knew where the fish were and put them right on top of them.
Our trip was wonderful. We caught a lot of Spanish mackerel. Most undersized, had to throw back. Caught a Tuna(kept) and lizardfish-threw him back. Great family experience! First mate James was great the whole day. Enjoyed Captain Joe’s humor. Thanks for the memories!
